Mark & Brian
(Dec 11th, 2001)
*Typed up by VALERIE*
Audio from Hanson's visit in the Music Room

This starts with the very first thing said on the show after the opening theme song:

Mark: Alright it’s already started - theeya, "Michael York" fans are gathering at the front gate -

Brian: And-

Mark: They’ve been there since like midnight.

Brian: - and before ya call, we can’t let you in!

Mark: Ya Michael York has asked please, y’know, keep ‘em at bay, when I’m reading my Christmas story . . .

Brian: Hya.

Mark: So, ya it’s nuts, it’s already crazy it’s -

Brian: Well I, I made uh, uh uh a slight faux pas, I thought they were listeners out there wanting Christmas show tickets - ‘cause every year, y’know we’ll have few out there and they’re dressed funny and they’ll of course be- Mark: There was one yesterday.

Brian: Ya! And but there were, about- seven, six or seven people out there so I stopped my car, got out, and said ‘Okay, how many tickets do y-’ couldn’t finish my sentence - "Do you think Hanson?! Could we come and see Hanson? Hanson Hanson Hanson!" ‘Cause Hanson’s gonna be on the show today,

Mark: Mm hm.

Brian: and this is what this is all about. Uh, and I thought it was also kinda funny - one of them said, "You know those two idiots that you guys let- you’re gonna let in the studio? Th-they’re just gonna annoy the hell out them. They’re gonna annoy the hell of out of them!" [Yelled] "They’re just gonna annoy y’em!"

Mark: You mean much like, you’re doing to me now?

Brian: [Laughs] It was gettin’ nasty out there.

Mark: Well yes today, we do have a- an action packed day, eight o’clock, we are very excited, um, one of our great actors Michael York . . . [edited] . . . so he’ll be in eight o’clock. And then, and while that’s happening, I guess we’re gonna be kind of engineering around him, gettin’ ready for, uh, the three brothers. Hanson is comin’ in, they’re gonna perform, they’re gonna take calls, we’ll talk, we’ll hang out. Uh and uh and so it’s an action packed busy busy day.

Brian: Gotta say though couple of ‘em were pretty cute.

Mark: Uh . . .

Brian: [Laughs] The girls out there a couple of them were pretty cute.

Mark: Oh sure . . . oh sure.

Brian: Oh they made them cookies,

Kelli: Oh my.

Brian: they said [whimpering] "Can you just tell them that we’ve been here since two thirty?"

Kelli: They got shooed away, I guess they had- they were asked to leave earlier. I came in with the big brouhaha so -

Brian: Right.

Kelli: Ya so, but they’re back now then? Ok, ok, alright . . .

Mark: Well, I think what they’ve- that they might have, I don’t know, but my guess is - like right now, they’re on the sidewalk. [Kelli laughs] Which is, common- territory.

Kelli: Right, ok.

Mark: You can be on the sidewalk

Kelli: Hm.

Mark: but I think they might have been venturing onto - "property!"

Kelli: Ahohh.

Mark: And so, [snicker] they might have been shooed. So . . .

Brian: Engineer Tim was a sniper in the army. [Mark & Kelli laugh] We might have ‘im, up on top roof here . . .

Mark: We’ll bust dat out . . .

Frankie: When Ge- when George comes in he may drag ‘em out by the feet.

Mark: Georgie-

Brian: Hya.

Mark: Georgie. He’ll take a bullet for us.

Brian: Huhhh - Well I-I, I wou- well think of this - the two girls that are going- that we invited to come in? ‘Cause they called, and we thought it’d be kinda silly and stupid to have these- these screaming i-idiotic fans. In the BACK studio, so they won’t bother Hanson. Uh, but you imagine when they drive in, through the gate?

Mark: Hm, hm.

Brian: They better not be wearing any Hanson paraphernalia because the girls’ll see ‘em. [Mark & Kelli chuckle]. It’ll be like crossing a picket line. [They laugh again]

Mark: Well, even my own daughter Amy is a, she- she came in today. She took part of the day off however I will take her to school - as soon as the show’s over and she has a, like a two mile run today.

Brian: Hm.

Mark: But she got up at four. So, I’m wondering if she’s gonna have- and it’s the last period of school she has to do this run. So I’m wondering if she’s gonna peter out. Gonna have enough energy to get this run done.

Brian: Wow.

Mark: Hey Previe.

Brian: Jill Wh- I oh what’s a matter Ji- Preva? What’s a matter?

Preva: [From background] I feel so bad for all those girls.

Brian: I know, I know. Well, uh I did for a minute. Preva just said she felt so bad for all those girls. But then they started gettin’ nasty talkin’ about those two girls that are coming in.

Preva: [Sweetly] Oh really?

Brian: [Mimicking in a dunce voice] "I can’t believe you’re gonna let those idiots in there."

Preva: [Still like she feels sorry for them] Ohhh.

Brian: Hey Amy.

Preva: [Quietly] They’re sweet though.

Amy: Hi Brian.

Brian: They are, they’re just big fans, they’re big fans.

They now went on to a few other subjects, and then mentioning their Christmas show they went on:

Brian: Just how egotistical of tha- of me was that? Thinking those people were out there wanting Christmas show tickets? And they were all fourteen year old girls.

Mark: [As Brian laughs] Oh I don’t think it’s egotistical, I think it’s, standard norm. I mean, usually this time of year we do have a couple of people who want Christmas show tickets.

Brian: [Still laughing] And that-that stand out there ya- but these were all fourteen year old girls - and they’re dangerous. Not really. Security’s kind of, freaking out about this whole thing.

Mark: Y’know so that-

Brian: But they’re- they’re not dangerous, they’re sweet.

Mark: So that you know, we kinda had to come down to a decision. Early- late last week. Um Hanson, in- in essence said to us, we’ll do either one that you’d like. We’ll do, the Christmas show or we’ll do come in the studio. Either way it’s gonna have to be an acoustic thing, because our band, is, with someone else. They’re touring right now we’re in the studio the band’s g- Uh, and so and- the Christmas show was basically full. So we decided why don’t this year we just go with this and then maybe next year- Christmas show. However the idea that Hanson would have done the Christmas show and had been joined by someone like Styx, or Pat Benetar- I mean, joining Hanson on stage ‘cause that last album Jonny Lang got on there with ‘em, John Popper got on there with ‘em. That coulda rocked. That coulda been rockin’.

Brian: Plus we decided not to have Hanson on this year’s Christmas show just to piss those six girls off outside the gate. [Mark, Frank & Kelli laugh quietly.]

Mark: Right.

Brian: Now there’s no chance in hell they’ll get to see ‘em!

Mark: Right. [Brian snorts]

There’s a little bit talking to Tito about being ready for Hanson fans. I think they may have taken a call from a Hanson fan in here some where, I didn’t keep that part of the show. Later as they came back from commercial the show was playing a piece of If Only:

Brian: Aaand welcome back to the Mark & Brian radio program. That there’s Hanson, is this off the new album?

Mark: Yes.

Then lots more show that wasn’t Hanson related. This was next:

Mark: Well uh, later today, we begin, the festivities with the reading of . . . [edited] . . . then, [long exhale] nine o’clock, Hanson. Comin’ in the room. Lookin’ forward to meetin’ the guys. Lookin’ forward to hearin’ ‘em sing -

Brian: Hm hm.

Mark: And lookin’ forward to what ever that other thing comin’ in is.

Brian: I have some- spent some time since uh Rita said that the second album was so good -

Mark: Hm hm.

Brian: And it is. I’ve spent some time with it, it’s a very good album.

Mark: Jonny Lang, John Popper -

Brian: Hm hm.

Mark: And the guys without, trying too hard, they were trying to leave, the pop thing a little bit. And they did it- really well because they didn’t do it so blatantly.

Brian: Well let’s-

Mark: I-

Brian: Let’s bone up on Hanson shall we?

Mark: Let’s.

Brian: Let’s bone up. This is from the bio. "Their 1997 debut album, Middle of Nowhere, sold over eight million copies world wide."

Mark: That would be successful.

Brian: "Middle of Nowhere earned them three Grammy award nominations including ‘Record of the Year’. Their hit single MMMBop debuted at number thirteen on the U.S. charts and eventually went- to number one in 27 countries."

Mark: I’ll be damned.

Brian: [As MMMBop begins playing in the background] That’s huge.

Mark: That is big.

Brian: "Rollingstone named Middle of Nowhere one of the essential albums of the decade."

Mark: Hm.

Brian: These guys are comin’ in today, they’re on our show. "Hanson became major teen idols - but credits their tight knit family foundation for keeping them grounded. Early on they began playing on local fes- festival schools and around the - their home town of Tulsa. They were turned down by five record labels before signing with Mircur- Mercury." We should get the list of those five labels and call when they’re here.

Mark: Hm.

Brian: And just go [said in a neener neener voice] hahahahaha-aaha!

Mark: Well you know- the deciding factor for me was uh, I mean- Amy was a big Hanson fan she had the cd and I- I didn’t think twice about it. I saw ‘em one New Year’s Eve they were performing and I thought ‘Okay, let’s see.’ They’re excellent live. And- and maybe it’s ‘cause they’re brothers. [MMMBop swells loudly] Maybe it’s kinda like the Jackson Five the great thing about having- your brothers as band mates -

Brian: Right.

Mark: is that you can always rehearse.

Brian: Hm.

Mark: They’re - they’re right there!

Brian: Right. Idn’ that cool?

Mark: It works!

Brian: In the next room. Get in here!

Mark: They really are- excellent live.

Brian: "Isaac - guitar, vocals. Taylor - vocal, keyboards and Zac - drums." Now I- when I first saw the video of MMMBop I thought, ‘Okay Zac’s not really playing those drums.’ But he really does.

Mark: Ya.

Brian: Ya.

Mark: So- they’re comin’ in. And it’s already a scene, there’s a thing out by the guard shack. [A female chuckles way in the background] That’s been growing since two thirty this morning. And uh, even Preva -

Brian: What-

Mark: is a fan.

Brian: What did Preva wear today?

Mark: Well she’s wearing the Christmas gift that uh, that our family gave her. And I said- ss- so she’s thrown that on.

Brian: Oh ya.

Mark: Ya.

Brian: Oh we got a little belly there, that’s nice, okay.

Mark: Mm hm.

Brian: And uh, very nice.

Mark: Hmm.

Brian: Taylor - she’s already dibbed on Taylor.

Mark: Ya.

Brian: She gets Taylor. Which do you want Kel?

Kelli: I guess that Zac is the - wait no wait - it’s the- what’s the little one?

Brian: That’s Zac.

Kelli: Okay, the little one then.

Brian: So Frankie I guess that leaves Isaac for you.

Frankie: I’ll take ‘im. [Everyone laughs]

Mark: [Copying] I’ll take ‘im.

Brian: Okay good.

Kelli: Which one does Amy love?

Mark: Uh- I don’t know - AMY! Amy! Come ‘ere. Com-

Kelli: [Snickering] I guess you all gotta - you know- I don’t want to compete against Amy here, she’ll -

Mark: Amy do you have a favorite, Hanson brother? Is there one of them you like more than the other? Or do you just like the band?

Amy: I like Zac.

Mark: Uh hm.

Kelli: Uh oh.

Brian: Uhkay.

Mark: Now which one does- what is h- is he the lead singer er . . . ?

Brian: No he’s the drummer.

Amy: Mm mm he’s the youngest.

Mark: Oh-

Brian: How old- how old is he?

Amy: I don’t know.

Brian: You know like fourteen maybe? Is he that old yet?

Mark: I think so.

Brian: Ya. What?

Preva: [Faintly from the background] He’s like sixteen.

Brian: Okay- Preva says sixteen.

Kelli: [Surprised] Oh.

[Some murmurs]

Mark: He’s hot? Is that what you said?

Kelli: [Said like "uh oh"] Oh.

Mark: Get out!

Amy: [Laughingly] ‘Kay! [Kelli laughs]

Brian: What d’you mean - wait! Before you get out - what do you mean hot? [Everyone laughs loud.]

Mark: She giggled and ran!

Brian: [Kelli’s still laughing] Your daughter thinks boys are "hot."

Mark: [Exhaled sigh] Oh my God . . .

Brian: Uh huh.

Mark: I need a minute.

Brian: Ya, ya. [Laughs more] Oh.

Mark: I’ve never heard her say that!

Brian: Really?

Mark: "He’s hot!" What the hell is goin’ on- it’s supposed to be he’s cute.

Brian: He’s "hot."

Mark: AMY!

Brian: Hot- hot has sexual undertones.

Mark: Get back in here! [Everyone laughs]

Brian: Dudn’ it?

Mark: YES!

Brian: Ya, that’s what I thought.

Mark: Lemme explain somethin’ to you. [Amy giggles] He’s cute. That’s what you say. He’s not hot. How old are you?

Amy: Twelve.

Mark: Twelve! He’s cute. You’re still coloring in coloring books and playing with dolls. He’s cute!

Brian: That’s because you live here. If you still lived in the South where your parents are from you’d be married by now. [Everyone laughs] So -

Mark: So, he’s not hot, he’s cute.

Amym: No-wuh!

Mark: [Copying] No-wuh!

Brian: He’s hot. Wha- what is hot to you? What-what-what- what makes up hot?

Amy: [Giggling] I don’t know!

Brian: When you look at a guy and go "That’s a hot guy," why do ya say he’s hot? What-what’s hot to you?

Amy: [Still giggling] I don’t know.

Brian: Cute? I mean good hair, I mea- clothes, talented? Do ya like-

Amy: It depends.

Brian: Okay. In-

Mark: ON WHAT?

Brian: In Zac’s case, why is h-

Amy: ‘Cause they-

Brian: Why is Zac hot?

Amy: He just is.

Brian: ‘K. You like the way he looks- the way he sing- the way he plays drums?

Amy: The way he looks.

Brian: The way he looks. Okay.

Mark: And what is it about you chicks that you can take a one syllable word like no - and you turn it into three syllables? "No-wahy!"

Brian: No-wah-ee?

Mark: I- i-it’s amazing what they can do when they get pissed. [Amy chuckles]

Brian: That’s actually Cherokee for "river." [Mark & Kelli laugh] No-wah-ee. [Amy laughs]

Mark: Git out Amy. Alright you’re not comin’ in here for Hanson. You’re gonna sit in there with Preva.

Amy: [As she’s leaving, said over Mark’s "You’re gonna sit"] Yes I am!

Mark: No you’re not!

Amy: [From background] Don’t you dare tell them!

Brian: You said one of ‘em’s hot? I’m gonna tell Zac you said he’s hot!

Mark: You’re clearin’ the room! [Kelli laughs] It’s not happenin’.

Brian: Gonna tell ‘im! [Mark exclaims something twice that I couldn’t make out and Kelli murmurs something too.] ‘K. Well it’s when she comes in and goes "Boy that Zac’s got a great ass!" I think that’s when you’re really gonna worry.

Mark: That’s- that’s when . . . oh-kay, a-greed.

Brian: We’ll be right back for the Mark & Brian radio program.

They go back to other subjects now, and then later:

Brian: . . . [edited] . . . and then later on, this morning Hanson will be here. Performing. I think it’s gonna be kind of an unplugged acoustical thing it’s gonna be cool.

Mark: I wonder what the uh, I wonder what the situation out by the front gate is? We should find out a little later on.

Brian: When we pulled in this morning there were like uh, like six to ten girls out there. And I thought they wanted Christmas show tickets no they wanted to see Hanson pull in.

Mark: [Laughs] I guess they’re used to it!

Brian: Ya.

Mark: I guess if you’re a Hanson, ’s the way it is.

Brian: Well sure! You know, just take it what it’s worth.

Next they played the Celebrity Birthday game (only the radio personalities play), where the right guesser gets to have their song selection play until someone else out guesses them. When Mark first won he said:

"Uh, I’m gonna go with the boys that are gonna join us at nine o’clock this morning, we sampled some of this yesterday. This is from their new album This Time Around. John Popper of Blues Traveler is on harmonica here. This song, written by the three brothers, this is called If Only."

Mark won a lot so we got to hear lots of the song, that was fun. Then there was more non Hanson related stuff including Michael York’s visit and then finally:

Mark: Welcome back! Mark & Brian radio program . . .

Brian: Just uh, back there - meeting the girls, the fans- of Hanson. And uh, and Eric and I played a little joke on ‘em. Eric looks at me and goes, "Brian, which- which one of the Hansons uh ar-aren’t coming?" [Mark laughs] A-and I said, ‘Taylor’ and they just went [gasps and yells] "OHHH!" [Mark laughs harder] But Eric- Eric Burden’s gonna take his place, so it oughta be good for ya.

Mark: Oh, it oughta be sweet.

Brian: No they’re all here girls we’re kidding you.
