Back to the Sound-Off Room
Kirsten's Howie Mandel Show Experience October 23, 1998
I'll begin at the beginning, so you'll understand my mood. First of all, the only way I could go was if I got a paper done before we left; I couldn't do it before Thursday night because I had midterms all week. So I was up all night, I finished at 2 and since we had to leave at 4 to avoid traffic I saw no purpose in going to sleep for an hour. That meant that I was so tired all day yesterday (I went to bed at 1030).
So we (my roommate and I) pick up our friends in Ventura on the way and get to NBC at about 630. There are a few groups of girls in front of us, but not too many. I was so tired I went to my car to see if I could get a nap in (didn't work). When I got back, and my roommate tells me that a girl with a shirt that says "HHMB" just went by, so I went up to her and said, "Hi, I'm Kirsten." It was [Nat]! And Jessie was with her too! Jessie has a blackmail picture of me trying to sleep:), but I made her take one of me after I was ready to go in too...
There were two lines of people, the kid line, who had to sit in the balcony and the adult line, who got to sit on the floor. To make a long frustrating story, short, after much arguing and flashing of id's to prove we were in fact over 18, we ended up in the front of the adult line. When we eventually got in they sat Suzanne and I right where in front where Hanson was going to play, and Stephanie was sitting in front where we thought the interview would be done. Again this was only after, hmm, shall we say, begging.
These seats were similar to where Suzanne and I were sitting at the last Leno, possibly even closer, so we were excited! The seat I was in actually makes you feel almost as if Hanson was giving you a private concert. Suzanne didn't like it last time, but I kind-of enjoyed it. You really feel all alone! I thought it was going to be like Leno where they tape straight though, including commercial breaks (in real time). This was not at all taped like that, each commercial break lasted 10 to 15 minutes, which wasn't bad when Hanson was on, but was annoying when they weren't.
So, finally the boys came on! And they looked so good! Isaac was wearing a tan over shirt (Taylor wore the same one before the Hollywood Bowl concert), and black velvet pants, Taylor was wear a tight white tank top with this mesh-like black shirt on over it, and black velvet pants too. Isaac's were a little different, but I can't explain how...And then there was Zac, that boy has a style all his own! He was wearing a mechanics jump suit; it had US Army or Navy written on it. I remember his shoes were really cool, red and black doc's. First thing was an interview, which we could barely hear because of all the screaming. I'm interested to hear what they actually said:) During it, Zac once again proved his short attention span:), he kept looking at his watch and playing with it (a new birthday present?). It was so funny! He'd pay attention long enough to make some joke and then return to whatever game it was his watch did. Oh and when Jennifer Love Hewitt called in, Isaac was very happy (surprise, surprise:)), I didn't notice what Zac did, but Taylor seamed to realize how unimpressed the audience was. He also looked annoyed when she said something about MMMBop. I don't think he likes being just thought of in terms of that song.
Then they performed "Gimmie Some Lovin.'" Actually we got to hear it something like four times, because they played to commercials and played the show out at the end. I'm pretty sure the boys recognized Suzanne and me from when we met them at the Hollywood Bowl and when we saw them at the last Leno:) Isaac waved at us after Suzanne said his name. She uses this lower than normal voice, which seems to travel over the high pitched screams. Stephanie said later that it looked like he was waiving at someone he knew. Suzanne also got Taylor to come over to us and shake our hands, twice! He is so nice! The second time he came over, so many people were touching his one hand that he stuck out the other so I could too. I'm so glad no one was taping what I looked like right then! I would HATE to see it! I'm sure I was doing something stupid!
After playing, they went over to the desk; there was a long break before the next segment was taped.
Stephanie had a conversation with Taylor. She was so calm! Except when it came to Isaac (who she has a big crush on). She gave Isaac a Clark bar from one of our other friends, Lark, who sat in the bleachers. The thing is she was just supposed to make sure he saw it, not give it to him, because it was really old. You see, it's a bit of a joke between us all and we make sure she has a Clark bar with her at all the Hanson appearances, the only problem is, it's been the same one! So it was all melted, nasty and old. She tried to get Isaac's attention, but got Taylor attention instead, she told him, "Don't let Isaac eat the candy bar!"
Taylor said, "Why not?"
"'Cause it's old and melted!"
"Then why didn't you get a new one?"
Since I wasn't there for the conversation, this is what I remember her telling me afterwards.
Alex Kingston came on next. She is the British doctor on ER. I was actually looking forward to her because I'd heard her do other interviews and she is really funny! She didn't disappoint. She started out by telling the boys that she had had a dream about them, except they were around forty in it! She said they all looked like old bikers:) She later embarrassed all three when she mentioned something about getting naked (I don't remember the circumstances, but it was part of a story...you'll see it). They all turned BRIGHT red! How cute!
The guys closed the show, playing GSL on the way out. When they were done, Taylor came over to us for the second time!
After the show, we went to my car, which was parked right by the place where Hanson exits. Usually it takes them a long time to come out, but for some reason, they were in a rush, and left right away. When we got over there though, the bass player, Scott, was coming out, so we went over and shook his hand. I sure he thought it was just because of Hanson (ok, so it was), but I do think he is really good looking!
My favorite part of the day was meeting a bunch of the message board people ([nat], Jessie, Noele, Faith, and Sherri. I hope I didn't forget someone...) Ok, I have to be honest, that was my second favorite part, my favorite part was getting to shake Taylor's hand. LOL! :)
