Chapter Twenty-Two -- Did you know you look like Jabba the Hutt when you sleep?

Taylor was, again, lying on his bed facedown looking dejected.

"Great job, Ike. Everything was going just fine, until you had to ask how the movie went," said Zac as he looked at Taylor.

"How does he breathe?" asked Avery from the door

"Go away," Taylor said, still with his head buried on the pillow.

"Yeah Avie. That would really help," Isaac said.

"I meant all of you," Taylor said as he got up to do some last minute packing.

"We are not leaving until you tell us what’s wrong. This is our room too," Ike said.

"Why do you really need to know, tell me!" Taylor asked.

"Well, I gotta have something new to bug you about, don’t I?" said Zac. "And I need something to base your closure ceremony from," he added.

"Oh no, we’re not doing that again. We almost got caught last night, remember?" Taylor asked, a smile starting to form. He was thinking of the scream they heard while fleeing Ginger’s house.

"Aha! A smile! Zac-man got you to smile!" they heard Mackie, who had joined Avery at the door, say.

"OK, enough," he said, smiling some more, as he shooed the two down the hall.

"Can’t make me move, I live here," Ike said. "So just what did happen last night?"

"It wasn’t really bad, it just really... got to me, the way she was acting last night. And Krissa didn’t make things any better, you know," Taylor told him.

"Um, no, actually, I don’t know. How who was acting?" Isaac asked.

"Leigh-Ann, of course! She was being such a b-"

"Have you seen Wicket?" Jessie popped her head in and asked.

"No, we haven’t," Ike said while he got up and shut the door. "Go on," he told Taylor.

"You know, you’re still not getting through. Tay, you’re going to start by telling us exactly what happened, then you can tell us how she earned your eternal enmity," Zac said. "Oh, and by the way, I asked Manda to take the film to be developed a few hours ago. We’ll have it before we leave."

"How’d you finish the roll of film so quickly?" Taylor asked.

"Well, it was an old roll. Plus, I took pictures of you sleeping. Did you know that you look like Jabba the Hutt when you sleep? Gaping mouth, slobbery green drool and everything!" Zac told him. "And if you don’t start talking, I’ll send the pictures to Bop and Tiger Beat magazine."

"Oh, OK, now that’s a threat. Plaster my sleeping face on every magazine cover from here to Timbuktu. First, I do not look like a Hutt. Second, fine, here’s the story. I showed up at the hamburger place a few minutes early, but most everyone else was already there. Eliza, Josh, and Leigh-Ann hadn’t shown yet, and Greg was meeting us at the theatre. They’d already ordered burgers and soda for everyone. So we sat down and were just talking and goofing around. Then Krissa walked in. You know how she’s always kinda had a crush on me?" Taylor asked.

"Yeah, that much I know," Isaac replied. "The rest’s still kinda fuzzy though."

The ringing of the bells on the door of the Metro Diner caused everyone at Taylor’s table to turn their heads. That and the very loud cry of "Taylor! Fancy meeting you here!" coming from Krissa Storney. Krissa swept over to the large booth the group of friends had taken and sat down, without asking, in the spot that was meant for Josh. Help, she’s practically sitting on my lap!

"So Taylor, what have you been up to lately?" asked Krissa, resting her head on his shoulders.

"Oh, um, well, not much really. We’ve just spent the last few days hanging around at home," he answered her, squirming while trying to send telepathic help pleas/death stares to his friends. The majority of the group was trying to eat their hamburgers without choking. Lara and Scott were visibly [and audibly] amused at his situation. He made a mental note to remember to think up some practical joke to get back at them. He still had some of that gum that turns your teeth black at home.

"Hi guys, you already ordered?" Leigh-Ann walked up to the booth and sat down opposite of Krissa. Seeing a window of opportunity, Taylor quickly stood up and dropped a kiss on Leigh’s cheek.

"Hi sweety," he said out loud, before she could protest. "Puhleeze, just play along," he begged her, slipping his arm around her shoulders. She stiffened for a moment, then nodded slightly.

"Erm, uh, are we still on for that date next Friday?" she asked him.

"No, don’t you remember? I’ll be in New York then," he answered, noting the annoyed look on Krissa’s face. She opened her mouth, about to say something.

"What shows are you doing while you’re in New York?" asked Marin, diplomatically changing the subject.

"Well, I know we’re playing a song at the Grammys, and I think Chris said we’re gonna be on David Letterman. What night, I’m not sure though. I know we’re being interviewed on MTV sometime, also Entertainment Tonight, and I think that’s it." Taylor told her.

"I can’t believe it. The little boys down the street, nominated for three Grammys! I still remember when you played at my brother’s birthday party!" Krissa oozed taking Tay’s hand.

"Krissa, you don’t have a brother." Kaitlin reminded her.

"Oops, I meant my sister," she said, smiling sweetly, starting to kiss Taylor’s fingertips.

"I’m sorry but I can’t take this anymore!" Tay burst out, taking his hand from Krissa’s. "Krissa, I don’t like you. I will not go out with you. I will never go out with you. Will you please leave me alone or do I have to file a restraining order against you?" Taylor asked.

"You wouldn’t have any reason to file against me. I haven’t done anything like that." Krissa protested.

"’Scuse me, but if I remember correctly, I once saw you climbing the tree by his bedroom window trying to get inside because they wouldn’t let you in the front door," Kaitlin announced smugly. "I believe that is grounds for a restraining order." Kaitlin and Krissa had never been on the best terms and Krissa melting all over poor Taylor just disgusted her. How could anyone be so obviously desperate?"

"Hi guys." Eliza and Josh walked up to the table as Krissa stormed out of the diner. "Did we miss anything important?"

"I still don’t see what the problem is. So you made her pretend to still be your girlfriend. As long as you explained it nice afterward, I don’t see what the big deal is. You did explain it nice afterward, right?" Zac asked.

"Yeah, but that’s not the problem. After I blew up at Krissa, she stormed out of the diner. I explained to Leigh-Ann, and she understood that part. But then she wouldn’t talk to me for the rest of the evening. When I finally got her to listen long enough for me to ask why she was mad at me, she said I ought to know," Taylor said miserably.

"You, you, you oughta know!" sang Zac. "Maybe if you analyze the song ‘You Oughta Know’ you’ll find some deeper meaning and insight into the problem."

Ignoring Zac, Taylor continued to Isaac, "I told her, no I didn’t know, and we ended up getting in this huge fight. Somehow, word slipped out and there were a few photographers following us. They were at least decent ones, they didn’t bug us while we were eating or in the movie, but they didn’t help either. They must have taken rolls of film of us fighting. Kaitlin congratulated me for standing up to Krissa. Then she and Daniel, who thinks Krissa’s hot, got into a huge debate. You know how Lara’s from Quebec? She started cussing a blue streak in French. That’s when people started staring. You couldn’t understand what she was saying, but you could definitely tell what meant."

At that, Isaac had to laugh. He had met Lara before and knew what she could be like when she got started. "Go on," he said.

"Well, then everyone started arguing with someone. Lara was scolding me for treating Krissa so badly while at the same time complaining to Leigh-Ann what a ditz Krissa was. Josh was yelling at the photographers, and Scott was telling Lara to shut up." Taylor let out a big sigh. "What a night. Afterwards, we crashed for a while at Scott’s house. Then I came home and we went to Ginger’s."

"You know Taylor, I see now why everyone says you babble during interviews. You probably do! You’ve just spent twenty minutes telling us about your night and I still don’t see why you’re mad at Leigh-Ann," Zac complained.

"Well, she was just acting so horrible."

"Um, that’s because you made her pretend to be your girlfriend when you just broke up last night, acted like a total jerk to another member of the female sex in front of her, probably gotten her face onto the front page of the Tulsa World, Tulsa Today, and the Urban Tulsa, acted like a jerk in front of her, and made her the middle of a huge scene in the movie theatre lobby. Hmm, I wonder why she’s annoyed?" Isaac blared in Taylor’s face.

"Boys, we’re leaving in an hour. Is your stuff all ready?" The door opened and their father stuck his head inside.

"Almost, Dad," Taylor answered.

"Put your stuff in the foyer when you’re done with it so we can load the vans," he instructed them.

"OK, Dad," Isaac told him as Taylor stated throwing a few more things in his suitcase. "So what are you gonna do about Leigh-Ann?"

"I dunno yet," Taylor said. "I guess I should probably apologize. But I’m not sure how. Got any ideas?"

The clerk was looking at her kind of funny, Manda noticed, as she went to Walgreen’s to pick up the photos Zac had asked her to develop for him. Ignoring that, she paid the boy behind the counter. The woman who was running the developing machine was looking strangely between her and the packet of photos she was holding. That’s it, she thought. Zac gave me the film to develop, he didn’t tell me not to look at the pictures. All he said was not to tell anyone it was his film. For five dollars plus the cost of developing, she’d agreed easily. Any extra money was always good. He should know that I’d look at them, if he didn’t, he’s dumber than I thought. She opened the packet of photos and shuffled through them. Then she broke into a run for the Hanson house.

The doorbell began to ring furiously. Jessie went to go answer it, after peeking through the window to see who was at the door. "Hi Manda. Wanna go jump rope for a while before we leave?"

"Hi Jessie! I’m really really really sorry, but I gotta go ask Zac something right now. Maybe when we’re through, though, OK? Gotta run! See ya in a bit," Amanda blurted out and dashed up the stairs to the boys’ room.

Upstairs, Isaac asked, "Zac, did Wicket gain a hundred pounds?"

"No, why?"

"Probably cause something that big is pounding upstairs," Taylor noted, about to haul his bag downstairs. Right then, Manda burst in the room, almost hitting Taylor in the nose with the door.

"Zac I want an explanation and I want it NOW!" she said.

"An explanation about what?" Zac asked innocently. Uh oh. Now I remember how why there were only a few frames left in the film.

"First, why couldn’t you go develop this film yourself? Second, why are there pictures of a toilet papered room in this roll? Third, why are there pictures of Taylor drooling? Fourth, why are there pictures of ME?"

"Pictures of you? Lemme see those pictures!" Isaac said, taking the pouch of photos. Flipping through, he saw some pictures from their last appearance, a few pictures of Taylor sleeping "like a Hutt", the four pictures taken of Ginger’s room, and a couple pictures of Manda sitting in a tree reading.

"Zaccy, you got some ‘splaining to do!" Taylor said, in an absolutely horrible Ricky Ricardo accent.

"Zac, did you take Wicket to the kennels?" Diana Hanson’s voice rang up the stairs.

"Um, what Mom? I can’t hear you!" Zac answered and dashed out of the room. Thank you Mom, perfect timing, I have never loved you more.

"Either that boy going to kill me, or I will kill him," Manda declared. "But since he’s not here, you two can explain this roll of film."

"Well, we can explain the TP room, and we can explain the concert, if you really want to hear, but only Zac can tell you what’s up with the pictures of you cause frankly, we don’t know," Isaac said.

"I’m curious though. We’ll get it out of him. We’ve got at least three hours in a contained space with him, we’ll work it out and call you when we get an answer," Taylor grinned, imagining the torture they would put poor Zac through.

"So what’s with the toilet papered room?"

"You remember that time we went on a triple date?" Isaac asked.

"Yeah."

"Well, that’s Isaac’s date’s room. Which we redecorated," Taylor proudly announced.

"What! Why did you do that to the poor girl’s room? She was nice!" Amanda demanded.

"That’s kind the thing. She was nice. Then she turned into a witch."

"A witch?"

"Yeah. She was acting all sweet and everything to Ike, then she decided he didn’t exist. And actually, she’s really NOT poor. Oh, and it was all Zac’s idea," Tay told her.

"OK, OK, fine. So how’d you pull it off? Wait, don’t give me too many details, I’m not a party to this offense," Manda said.

"Basically, Zac got caught on a scouting mission and made friends with Ginger’s neighbor. The neighbor, Jem, got the housekeeper to distract Ginger’s parents and let us in. Ginger was out babysitting. We fixed that up too," Ike informed her.

"Wow. And you did all this without getting caught?"

"Yup. We almost got caught but escaped out the window right before Ginger walked in. You should have heard her scream! It was awesome! I think if the window wasn’t open, she’d have cracked it," Taylor declared.

"That's why Zac couldn't get it developed himself. If the photo people noticed Zac Hanson picking up those photos, word would get out and Ginger would have our heads," Ike explained.

"Great, so now Ginger'll have MY head!" Manda declared.

"No, cause now all the photo people will think, this weird girl brought in the strangest pictures today and the next strange pictures that come in, they'll forget about it. That's what makes it perfect," Ike reassured her.

"Half-hour alert!" their dad hollered up the stairs. "Be ready or we’ll leave without you!"

"Oh, I told Jessie I’d go play jump rope with her for a while before you guys leave. I better go. See ya in a while downstairs," Manda remembered.

"Ok, if you see Zac, don’t hurt him too much and send him to us," Isaac said as she headed down the stairs. "See ya."

"So what do you think is up with those pictures of Manda Zac took?"

"I should think it’s obvious. It's just a little crush!" Taylor started singing, as he picked up his bag and took it downstairs.
